Past Simple & Past Progressive

Entenda quando usar cada tempo verbal

Past Simple

Usado para ações curtas e completas no passado. A ação começou e terminou.

Como formar:

Afirmativa

I played in the rain.

verbo + -ed (regulares) ou forma irregular

Negativa

I didn't play in the rain.

didn't + verbo na forma base

Pergunta

Did you play in the rain?

Did + sujeito + verbo na forma base

Exemplos: I kicked a ball. / She calmed down. / He left the meeting.

Past Progressive (Past Continuous)

Usado para ações longas e em andamento no passado. A ação estava acontecendo por um tempo.

Como formar:

Afirmativa

I was playing in the rain.

was/were + verbo + -ing

Negativa

I wasn't playing in the rain.

wasn't/weren't + verbo + -ing

Pergunta

Were you playing in the rain?

Was/Were + sujeito + verbo + -ing

Quando usar was / were:

was

I, he, she, it

were

we, you, they

Exemplos: I was writing my diary. / They were playing soccer. / She was running around.

Interrupted Past

Quando uma ação longa (Past Progressive) é interrompida por uma ação curta (Past Simple). Usamos "while" ou "when".

Estrutura:

While + Past Progressive, + Past Simple

Past Simple + while + Past Progressive

While I was writing a poem, I started to feel better.

ação longa (writing) + ação curta (started)

While I was watching the movie, I wanted to cry.

ação longa (watching) + ação curta (wanted)

I was watching TV when my mom called.

ação longa (watching) interrompida por ação curta (called)

While they were playing, Lucas broke his arm.

ação longa (playing) + ação curta (broke)
